A reader’s problem room becomes a favorite spot
to relax with a fresh furniture arrangement, small-
space tricks, and a medley of fabrics.

Good start Amy and Jeff Zappia
had no problem decorating their
home outside Pittsburgh—until they
hit the front room. Odd angles and bay
windows stumped them. “We called it the
‘dumping zone,’ ” says Amy. “We threw
everything in there and closed the blinds.”
Stephen’s solution “Amy
and Jeff’s room needed color and wood
tones for warmth,” Stephen says. The
small room also called for furniture that
wouldn’t overcrowd. A scaled-down
armless settee and a pair of slipper
chairs are a comfortable fit.
